Question 1 of 5
Does my SMSF need an independent valuation?
Not always. The ATO says trustees must value every asset at market value each 30 June using objective and supportable evidence, but a qualified independent valuer is only required by law in limited cases. The ATO recommends one when an asset is a large part of the fund or hard to value, such as private company shares or unit trusts.
This check gives general information from the ATO's guidance on valuing SMSF assets. It is not advice. Talk to your auditor about the evidence they will expect. Read the full guide to SMSF valuations
