Family law matters

Family law valuations are prepared through our dedicated family law practice, Family Law Valuations: Settlement Valuation $1,495 + GST for a business with annual turnover under $2 million, or $2,495 + GST; Expert Report $4,495 + GST. How it works for SMSF interests

What does each fee cover?

Each fee covers one entity: a written valuation of the units or shares at one valuation date, for the purpose agreed in the engagement letter. The report sets out the method, evidence, assumptions and the valuer's independence.

  • Investment entity: $995 + GST. A unit trust or company that holds property, cash, term deposits or listed investments, valued from its net assets.
  • Trading business, turnover under $2 million: $1,495 + GST. Shares or units in a company or trust that runs a smaller business.
  • Trading business, turnover $2 million to $10 million: $2,495 + GST. The same, for an established business.
  • Trading business, turnover over $10 million or a complex structure: $3,495 + GST. Larger or more complex businesses.
  • Annual update: $495 + GST per entity. Our own valuation from last year, rolled forward to this 30 June.

Delivery: investment entity 2 business days, smaller trading business 2 business days, established trading business 3 business days and annual update 2 business days. A larger or complex business is agreed before we start. Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received.

How do you tell an investment entity from a trading business?

By what the entity does. An investment entity holds property, cash, term deposits or listed investments, and we value its units or shares from its net assets. A trading business runs a business, so we value it mainly on what it earns, and the fee follows its annual turnover.

A unit trust or company can be either, so the quote form asks which. A trust or company that owns property is priced as an investment entity. If you are not sure, we confirm the kind and the turnover band on the call, before we quote. See how we value.

What is the annual update?

It rolls a valuation we prepared last year forward to this 30 June, for the same entity with no restructure or major change. Where the entity has changed in a major way, we do a full valuation instead.

It keeps the value current without starting again. The ATO's guide says a previous valuation can be relied on if it is still appropriate, but not if it is materially inaccurate or the value has changed significantly.

What are the add-ons?

  • Each additional valuation date: $495 + GST. For example a value at 30 June and another at the date of a transfer.
  • Each additional trading entity: $795 + GST.
  • Investment entities: each has its own fee, $995 + GST.

How do batches work?

Accountants and administrators can send one fund or a whole 30 June list. Each entity is valued and priced separately. We agree a delivery schedule for batches before we start. See the page for accountants and auditors.

What changes the fee?

The fee follows the scope, not the hours and not the value we reach. These things change it:

  • Whether the entity is an investment entity or a trading business
  • For a trading business, its annual turnover, or a complex structure
  • An additional valuation date or an additional trading entity
  • Court, tribunal or dispute work, which is quoted individually

What is not included in the fee?

Property held directly by your fund: we are not taking direct property valuations yet. If a trust or company owns the property, we value the units or shares using a property valuation you already hold. The property figure comes from a valuation by a registered or certified property valuer, which is not part of our fee. We never sign a property figure ourselves.

We value assets. We do not provide legal, taxation, investment or financial product advice, and we never advise on whether to set up a fund, buy, hold, sell, contribute, roll over or start a pension.

What do family law and court work cost?

SMSF interests in a property settlement are prepared through our dedicated family law practice, Family Law Valuations. Settlement Valuation: $1,495 + GST for a business with annual turnover under $2 million, or $2,495 + GST. Expert Report: $4,495 + GST. See which report you need and our page on SMSF family law valuations.

A report prepared for commercial purposes is not a court expert report. Court or tribunal work is a separate engagement with its own fee. Disputes and court work: Quoted individually.

Questions

Is GST included in the fees?

No. Fees are shown plus GST.

Is there an hourly rate or an extra charge for urgent work?

We confirm the fee in writing before we start. No hourly billing. Urgent is a timing preference only, and there is no rush surcharge. Tell us your audit date and we will say on the call whether we can meet it.

Does the fee depend on the value you find?

No. It is fixed by the type of entity and, for a trading business, its turnover.

What if the fund holds several entities?

Each entity is valued and priced separately. An additional trading entity: $795 + GST. An additional valuation date: $495 + GST.

Can you value the property my trust owns?

We value the trust's units or shares, not the property itself. The property figure comes from a valuation by a registered or certified property valuer that you already hold, and we never sign a property figure ourselves.

How long does a valuation take?

An investment entity takes 2 business days, a smaller trading business 2 business days and an established one 3 business days. Delivery time starts once payment and all required information have been received.
